What is a cookie?

A cookie is a little text file that is sent to your computer by a web site. Have you ever wondered why some web sites seem to know who you are when you come back? Or have you ever “personalized” a web site to remember your favorite news service, etc… Most of these types of features are handled with the use of cookies.

Not all web sites use cookies. For the ones that do, you’ll get a cookie the first time you visit. Sometimes, you may be asked to fill in a form with your preferences then when you return to the site the next time, the web server will “read” the cookie on your computer and remember who you are.

By default, most web browsers will just accept cookies. You can turn on a “cookie warning” to see when a site is trying to send you one (refer to your help files for how to do this for your web browser). Some people don’t like the idea of a web site sending you files without telling you, but it’s really not something you should loose any sleep over. If you’re using Windows95, you can view the cookies on your computer by going to the c:\windows\cookies folder on your drive. You can open a cookie in any text editor to see what it contains.
