 Portland Then and Now

Portland Then and Now!!!
Postcards from Portland

We thought it an appropriate time to bring back a feature we originally did in the spring of 1999.

The response to “Portland Then and Now” was extremely favorable.  These postcards were purchased at several flea markets and shows, including the Pine Tree Postcard Club show, for a couple of bucks apiece.  At the show you can find postcards from all over the state, sorted by town, subject or state.  I picked up a small pile of cards from my hometown up the coast a ways.  These cards offer a look into the past, and reexamining the locale today helps us vividly see the passage of time.

I tried, as much as possible, to stand in the very place from where the original image was taken. Often, even when the buildings are substantially different today, locales retain something of the feeling you see in the cards.  Other times it takes a bit of sleuthing to pin down the exact location from where an image was captured.  Where do you think the picture on this page was?  See It Now.

Congress Street in Winter

Thanks again to the people at Greater Portland Landmarks, who helped with some of the mysteries when I originally did this feature.
