On
October, 11, one month after the tragic events of September
11, Mainers will gather in more than 60 libraries throughout
the state to share their thoughts about that day and its
consequences, and to reflect on the meanings of freedom.
The
Maine Humanities Council is organizing these facilitated
community gatherings, which will focus on two short readings,
an excerpt from a speech by Franklin D. Roosevelt and a poem
by W. H. Auden.
All of
the discussion leaders have volunteered their time to help
participants explore the insights these writings can offer us
in troubling times. The readings the Council has chosen,
read in the light of current concerns, have the potential to
help people think deeply about who we are as individuals, as
communities and as a country.
The Maine Humanities Council invites
all Mainers to join their neighbors in this statewide evening
of reading, reflection and remembrance on Thursday, October
11, 2001, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. This program is
offered with assistance from the Maine
State Library and the Study Circles Resource Center, a
project of the Topsfield
Foundation.
In
Aroostook County the following locations will host the
discussions:

In addition to sponsoring these
community discussions in every county in the state, the
Council, aware of the general need for more knowledge about
Islam and the Arab world, is developing educational programs
for teachers and the general public.
The
Maine Humanities Council is a statewide private nonprofit
organization which uses literature, history, philosophy and
the arts to provide opportunities for people to come together
in conversation that crosses social, economic, and cultural
differences. The Council is celebrating its 25th
anniversary this year.
