August 17, 2001 Every Eastern Maine kid knows the stately sentinel that stands on the shores of the Penobscot River, across from the town of Bucksport. There lies Fort Knox, named for General Henry Knox, who served on George Washington's staff during the American Revolution. The Fort has been open to the public for years. It's an essential day trip for families who live nearby and a key stop in any trip Down East. On their Guide to Maine Forts, my kids gave Fort Knox the top four cannonball rating. If you can't make the drive, you can check out the Fort Knox web site and take a look at these choice IPIX images we took a couple of weeks ago.
